Works For Me Wednesday – Thing Exchange
.
Food wasn’t the only thing cooking* this past week– so was my brain! I came up with this brilliant idea.
Since it is Works for Me Wednesday which is hosted by Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer, I thought I’d share the idea.
What about having a “thing” exchange?
There are things I’d love to use once in a while but don’t want to/can’t afford to pay for them.
First, I made a list of all the things I am willing to loan.
Like my . . .
- waffle iron
- curling iron
- Book: How To Go To College Almost For Free (didn’t help me so much, but I’m willing to lend it)
- candy molds
- tiny muffin pans
- bear shaped muffin pan
- 3”x5” loaf pans
- in fact just about any pan I own!
Second, get my friends to make up similar lists.
Things I’d like to see on my sister’s list:
- Crockpot (which is cleaned and returned back to her)
- Sticker-maker
- Heart-shaped pan
- Springform pan
Third, make some kind of “where’s the thing” list.
Perhaps create check-out cards similar to those library books used to have. (If you are too young to know what that means, do a google search.)
I’d prefer to go electronic. I could create a thing exchange blog. My friends and I could list our things online, make requests, reservations, and times to pick up the item. We could even post tips about our things.
And I’d like to include a wish list. I’d put breadmaker and decent iron on my list.
Hey, this works for me. I’ll let you know if my friends are willing to let it work for them too.
Be sure to check out Rocks in My Dryer for more tips.
* I made apricot salsa chicken, chili, roast with potatoes and carrots, burritos, BBQ chicken. With the exception of the burritos the rest was cooked in crockpots. Since its been too hot to cook on the stove, I borrowed my sister’s crockpot and used two at the same time.
That’s fair since she borrowed my waffle iron.

What a great idea! I went to a women’s retreat once and the speaker was talking about how sharing our things is indicative of community, and the lack of sharing is indicative of how we don’t have a lot of community in our culture.
She gave an example of how hard this is for us. She described how in her small cul-de-sac, each family had its own lawn mower and the shed, gas, cleaning stuff, etc. to go with it. She asked, “What kind of revolution would it take, for us independent Americans to agree as neighbors to share one lawn mower, and sell the others, and give the proceeds to a worthy cause?”
You are positively revolutionary!

No kudos really – The cooking bug hit me and I HAVE to take advantage when tht happens.
If I was smart I would’ve done the salad route too.

Doodah, you come up with the most original stuff! I hope a bunch of people read your blog regularly!
It would be cool if people did band together to share major things instead of all buying the same item.
My sis and a friend did that with a video camera.
We’ll see how the thing exchange goes to know if I’m revolutionary or full of ideas.

Thanks for your kind words about my blog. I hope the same for you!
Nothing tests the bonds of friendship like a)camping together or b) sharing stuff.
Hope your thing exchange goes well!

Yes, as soon as I set up the borrowing procedures.

Btw I used it to make myself a grilled cheese sandwich – very satisfyingly browned and crunchy.
