Looking For the wRight Name

“Decaf Skinny Latte Extra Hot 4 Pepper.”

“Pepper?”

Oh yeah, that’s me. I’m Pepper. (Smile.) When I go someplace where I have to leave a name in order to get my merchandise, I often leave an “experimental” name.

Why? I’m still trying to figure out who I am. And even though I’ll be done with my MA by late August 2009, I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.

So, I try out names. Today the name Pepper came to me. I was thinking of black pepper. Since antiquity, black pepper was prized for its flavor and medicinal properties and was used as legal tender (for taxes and rent to name a few). If a peppercorn was dropped, it was searched for until found as if it was a pearl. From the 1840’s on pepper had the figurative meaning of spirit or energy which was shortened to pep.

I like those attributes. But I think I’ll still keep on trying other names.

While I may not have all the answers about who I am, I have all the answers as to WHOSE I AM. God’s precious daughter. I am His chosen, adopted child who can never be snatched out of His hand. For more of who I am go here.

Have you ever given an “experimental” name before? Why? What was it?

That is incredibly funny. I’ve never given an experimental name before, but I’m going to have to try it out now! I often have to give my maiden name at restaurants though because my married name is so crazy common…

Jessie, I think it used to scandalize my daughter when I did this. I’d tell her “no-one here knows me and I probably will never see these people again.” Now she gets a kick out of what names “we” are going to give.

Be sure to let us know what name(s) you use.

I never knew you did this – how fun! I think I will try leaving a different name the next time I can…hmmmm….what name should I leave?

When I was in 6th grade my two friends and I loved the Betsy, Tacy and Tib books! We each made up a different name. My best friend was Magda! LOL and I was Tobi. I don’t remember the other girls name or why in the world I would pick Tobi which is not a very “romantic” or exciting made up name.

But whenever I hear of people doing this I think of Anne saying to Marilla, “Could you call me Cordelia?” “Is that your name child?” “No, but isn’t it…” and Anne goes into a diatribe on all her imaginings of this lovely name as Marrilla shakes her head “For Heaven’s sakes child!” (I can’t imagine anyone but Colleen Dewhurst playing Marilla!).

In my circle, we call those our Starbucks Names, and its quite common:

Mine is usually “Julie”. Although now and then I throw in something more fun, like “Natasha”. I once made a restaurant reservation under “Abe Froman” – which is the fake name Ferris Beuller used in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. 🙂 “Abe” makes a lot of donations too.

Oh guess what! I found a Starbucks Name Generator. Mine came out “Dreamy”. LOL.

Disclaimer: I only tried my name, so I have no idea if the content is always complimentary or PG-rated. Good luck!

When I’m in my morning mode, my name is also pretty, pretty princess.

When my night owl personna takes over, Starbucks says to call me Speedy.

And if i’m sleeping all the time, Snuggles is the name. And when sleep has fled, Gypsy Rose will do.

I’m not too thrilled with these. I think I’ll stick to Pepper, or Kit or Victory.
