5 Reasons I Love Fall

. at . 18 comments

Each season has its own beauty. Even though the seasons where I live are not always distinct, there is a different feel and function for each one.

While Fall is not my favourite season, I bet if I think hard enough, I can come up with reasons to love the season and to even be grateful for it.

Doing this “thinking” exercise is not merely a writing tool. It is a way to enhance my gratitude and my happiness.

If you’d like to join this gratitude-thinking exercise, go to Susanne’s blog and link up your post of 5 blessings about Fall or anything from this past week.

“It is not happy people who are thankful; it is thankful people who are happy.” (Quote and a decorating idea with the quote from this website.)

1. Thankfulness. Of all the seasons, I think Fall reminds me most about being thankful. Harvests, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all point me to the attitude of gratitude. There are events, people, and organizations that I am grateful for because of how they impact the world we all live in. Of course, I am extra grateful to God because of the above.

2. Orange. Right now the colour orange is one of my favourite colours (not to wear though). It is cheery and bold. The colour tends to make me feel invigorated. I love seeing it in Autumn’s nature (mums, squash, oranges, pumpkins, leaves, sunsets).

When I was in high school my room was decorated in orange. My soft-sided luggage was even orange. I was always able to pick it out very quickly when claiming my luggage at the airport.

3. Holidays. I like the official time off and attention dedicated to holidays. They help me make time for expressing gratitude in words and actions and for spending quality time with those I love. The Fall has most of my favourite holidays: Veterans Day, Halloween, and Thanksgiving.

4. Christmas. Even though Christmas is in the winter season, most of the prep is done in the Fall. I like doing the activities that are a prelude to the actual Christmas Day.

  • I like the card and gift shopping because it is a small way to tell others “thank you” for their presence in my life.
  • I like the events (religious choir/chorale performances, church services, door-to-door singing) that remind me about the Reason for the Season.
  • At these events I often have an opportunity to express my gratitude to God.

5. Food.  The Fall season has the best food of all the seasons. Their tastes, smells, and look all thrill my senses.

  • Pumpkin flavoured and pumpkin pie spiced everything: pie, drinks, soup/stews, and breads to name a few things.
  • There are also the elaborate and countless recipes for cookies, candies, and cakes that get made during this season in preparation for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not only are they are a sensory delight, but I have many wonderful memories of baking with family and friends.
  • And lastly the meats served at this season fill the bill for home-cooked contentment (turkey, roast, honey-baked ham).

I see that I have some deep feelings for the Fall season. I know I could add more items to this list.

Your Turn . . . What are your feelings about Fall? Go ahead and list some of  your favourite things.

This is the 15th post in the “5 Reasons I Love . . .” Series. Go here for the original post which explains how this idea came about. The next post in this series is 5 Reasons I Love Winter.

If Fall isn’t your favorite season, then which one is? by your recollections it sounds it is a close 2nd. I love orange as an accessorie. Wore orange sandals over summer. For winter I would like to have either a purple purse or gray for a signature piece.
DVD fireplace was bought at target last year for a buck. If I see one again, I will pick one up for you. It can be used on a computer. You could have a “fake fire” at work.

Lynette, Spring is my fave season – at least I think it is! 🙂 Doing this post made me really think about what I like.

A purple or grey purse would be quite lovely. I recently found a reddish one at Kohl’s (for $11) that is great. My brown purse was too small and my wallet kept falling out!

Fake fire at work would be a nice compliment to the pumpkin pie spice smell from my electric plug in scent thingees. (I am having a brain fade!)

Love this post. I like all these things too. Fall just seems so fragrant and colorful to me. My senses are filled to the brim! And it is the beginning of a long season of traditions, and my heart loooooves traditions! The Annual Trip to Apple Hill, The Annual Meatloaf Dinner, Pumpkin Carving Night, The Murphy’s Costume Party, Halloween, Watching You’ve Got Mail and The Lord of the Rings, Christmas Crafts, Baking Treats, Advent, Christmas, Epiphany… Love it, love it, love it! 😀

I love all your traditions, Dawn. Annual Meatloaf Dinner and watching You’ve Got Mail and The Lord of the Rings? I wonder how these started as traditions. I hope you tell us sometime on your blog.

Just reading your list makes me hungry for the festivities to begin! Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks for sharing all the great things about autumn. I love them all, too.

I like orange a lot, too. I don’t have any orange in my house, but I’m kind of wishing I did!

LOVE your list this week. I second all of it!!

I do love orange, but it doesn’t look so great with red hair…! Fall colors are lovely, though.

    Have a great, happy week!

I don’t like orange much, except in sunsets and leaves, and here I moved right in the middle of UT country, LOL! Orange everywhere on game days!

I love the sights, smells, and foods of this time of year, too.

You asked if I had any favorite posts on my blog — I have a section in my sidebar with a few favorites. I need to update it — haven’t done so in a long time.

well, autumn is MY fave season….but then again I live in the great northeast where it is just glorious!! I’ve written about some of them in my FFF post this week. Love your list…sounds like you DO enjoy many things about the season….I also just love shopping for gifts at xmas….just love it! can’t wait to see your series on reasons you love your religion but for me, I like to think of being an evangelical Christian as just a Christ follower….NOT a religion 🙂 My hubby and i like to say we’re Christians, not religious! lol….
hugs to you and have a great weekend!!

Fall is my favorite season. I love everything you mentioned about it. I’m liking your orange suitcase. It definitely would make it easier to pick out of a pile for sure.

I found a pumpkin pie spice at the farmer’s market and have been adding a few sprinkles into my coffee. Yummy!

I have to agree with all 5 of your reasons. I’ll add to it that I love fall in CA even though we don’t have the striking colors of the East coast, everything is still pretty- the way the light looks in the afternoon and peacefulness that comes with early darkness. Its a nice change from summer.

I never used to like Orange but the last year or two the color has grown on me, as has Yellow.

I love Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays. We usually decorate the day after Thanksgiving for Christmas and the excitement begins!!!

I love the fall holidays too. Thanksgiving may be my favorite because there is so much less pressure for that holiday than for Christmas. And I’m all about no pressure. Southern CA has the BEST weather in the fall even better than spring although I think Spring is my favorite season (the excitement of planting my garden) I must mention my love off all things pumpkin! (Since I’ve become mostly vegan in my eating, I’m looking for a vegan pumpkin pie recipe)

Fall is not my favorite season simply because it heralds winter, but I do love the colors of fall and the crispness of the air. If fall could last till spring, I’d be a happy camper. 🙂

I also love orange – although not to wear (but only because I’m not brave enough). I don’t use the color in my home, either for some reason, but when orange pops up somewhere it is so happy and cheerful. Bright yellow is the same.
