Grateful 43 – Habits

I am not strongly ruled by habits. I am more of a go-with-the-flow type of gal. I have TRIED to establish a morning and evening routine. And I agree that I probably would get more done if I had these habits in place. BUT — no go.

I do have one weird, consistent habit though. When I get up, the first thing I do is brush my teeth. Later I will eat breakfast and then I brush them again.

I had to think hard to come up with some (not weird) habits. Maybe because they are so easily done they are not in the forefront of my thinking.

I am grateful 4 three habits. 

ONE. Read. I read (on my kindle or a real-life book) almost every day. In 2011 I started reading just for fun: Christmas books, classics, series, novels, and kid lit. Up until then I either read books for homeschooling or for my own education (first my BA and then MA). I try to read at least one book a week. This reading helps build my concentration. And since it is like a mini-vacation, it is a stress-reliever.

TWO. Pray in bed. I am a light sleeper. And the older I get, the harder it is to stay asleep. So quite a while ago I decided that if I woke, I would pray. Sometimes I pray “forever” and sometimes it is only a brief time before I fall back asleep. This way I do not get frustrated with my middle-of-the-night wakefulness. I know I am doing something worthwhile.

THREE. Movement. I like to track my steps on my cell phone. Using this gadget inspires me to complete 10,000 steps daily (usually). For the past month I have added one 5K a week that I do all at the same time. And then once a month, I walk a “professional” 5K with my friend Mary. This weekend (9/23) three other ladies will join us at the Heart Walk downtown. These steps add movement into an otherwise sedentary job and personal lifestyle.
