MORE vs less: Clutter is Delayed Action

Day 6 – What clutter decisions do you want to make today? Can you be satisfied with the first good option you find?

“People don’t realize that clutter actually is delayed decisions and delayed actions. Think about everything you have sitting around on your counter or on your desk, that’s an action you haven’t taken or a decision you haven’t made.”  from Lori Morrero’s How to De Clutter with Better Decision-Making video.

Here are her five tips. Listen to the video for an explanation of each tip.

  1. Take ownership.
  2. Set a deadline.
  3. Narrow your choices.
  4. Be a “Satisficer” not a “Maximizer.”
  5. Set policies for yourself.

There are two types of decision makers. There is a maximizer, which I relate to. Maximizers THOROUGHLY investigate every option. But in truth, they are never really satisfied that they have picked the right option. They feel there MUST be something better out there; so the search is never-ending.

On the other hand there aresatisficers.” They also investigate options, but once they find an option that meets their criteria and standards they stop looking. And they stop fussing/wondering if there is something better out there.

Barry Schwartz wrote about maximizers and satisficers in his book The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less. This book is available at the Sacramento public library.

Day 6 –  31 Minutes of Decluttering = Today’s mission was my work gmail inbox. No surprises, just tedious. Why did I delay making decisions on all these emails?
