Friday’s Fave Five – August 24, 2018

“Strive to find things to be thankful for, and just look for the good in who you are.” ~ Bethany Hamilton

It is time to recount 5 blessings from this past week. I am joining up with others at Living to Tell the Story for this week’s Friday’s Fave Five.

One. Geranium Cuttings. About three months ago a friend gave me 4 of these geranium cuttings. three took root; and look, this one is blooming.

Isn’t it beautiful?!

I love how cuttings multiply into more plants. . . . I’ve also grown plants by taking cuttings from my mom’s cactus plant.

Your Turn . . . Have you ever grown a plant from a cutting? . . .

TWO. OCC Plastic Boxes. I’ve done Operation Christmas Child (OCC) for a lot of years. This is the first time I have bought some (2 dozen) of their plastic shoe boxes. (To be fair, it is only the 2nd year they’ve been for sale.)

They are sturdy, roomy and pretty.

Your Turn . . . If you contribute to OCC, do you use your own shoe boxes (either cardboard or plastic) or do you use the pre-printed boxes from OCC (either cardboard or plastic)?

THREE. Cookie Love Sunday. Folks brought cookies. We took the first hour (at church) and made up plates and wrote notes of thanks.

During that time, some folks delivered their goodies. Cookies were delivered to neighbors, firemen, gas station attendant, VA hospital, Pet hospital, service members and wait staff.

I made cookies using a boxed cookie mix. I have never done that before. The macadamia white chocolate chip cookies mix was tasty.

Your Turn . . . What is your fave cookie?

FOUR. Cinnamon Water. This gallon container has two cinnamon sticks. It is refreshing and delicious.

I like to drink water, but sometimes I get tired of plain water. That is why I investigate putting different things into the water.

I have a LOT of extra lemon cucumbers this week. So the next time I fill up my water jug, I am putting in slices of cucumber.

Your Turn . . . Do you ever make flavoured water? If yes, what do you put in it?

FIVE. Virtual Reunion. For 80 minutes I attended a virtual reunion (via Facebook messenger) with 3 gals I went to high school with in Canada. We graduated 40+ years ago. I haven’t talked to two of the ladies in decades! It was an easy conversation and it was GREAT to visit and SEE one another. It was cool that we could have this group conversation. We are going to do this about every six weeks or so.

Your Turn . . . Have you ever had a virtual reunion? . . .  Is there a group of people who you could organize to meet up via Skype or FB messenger video chat?

BONUS. Bible Lens. This app adds a Scripture to your photo. You have a choice of multiple Scripture and multiple layouts. This is a free app and EASY to use. Thanks to Faith for sharing this app last week on her FFF.

Your Turn . . . We made these dolls for our OCC boxes. Would you put faces on them or leave them plain? . . . Which of the three doll photos/Scripture do you prefer?  . . . Aren’t you tempted to give this app a whirl?

Yes…as a matter of fact I have rooted a few starts from a Christmas cactus that need to be put in soil. Your Geraniumis beautiful!

It has been a few years since I’ve done OCC, but I always used my own shoe boxes.

I think most any cookie is my favorite one. haha…but seriously, I recently found a recipe with the name of “World’s best Chocolate Chip Cookie”…and it really is better than other chocolate chip cookies.

What a great idea for flavored water! I normally do not but I have come up with my own special iced tea. It consists of some Green Tea bags, Raspberry Zinger tea bags and some of my own mint that we harvest and dry.

No, I’ve not done a virtual reunion…other than Skype with our grandchildren. 🙂

Dianna, your iced tea recipe sounds good. I want to try that. We have a mint plant, too. And as you know they are prolific. How do you dry the leaves. That is something we haven’t done yet.

To dry the leaves we just put some in brown paper bags and leave them in one of our bedrooms upstairs. I go up every day or two and give them a shake and stir them around a bit to prevent molding from taking place.

The “recipe” that I make the tea with consists of 8 regular size tea bags of Green tea, two bags of the Celestial Seasons Raspberry Zinger and then I have a little metal cup with lid from Steeped Tea company and I fill it with the dried mint. I put all of these ingredients, along with a little more than half a cup of sugar into a glass bowl, pour boiling water over all and let steep for 10 minutes. I pour it into a 3 quart pitcher and add cold water.

Dianna – thanks for the tea recipe and instructions on how to dry the basil. I never would have guessed that.

I enjoyed your five favs! When I see geraniums, I think of my grandmother who had lots of them growing in pots. I didn’t know about not using regular cardboard shoe boxes for OCC. Plastic would be much more durable. I’ve had cucumbers in water at times. Very refreshing. I never thought of cinnamon. I’ll have to try that. Have a lovely weekend.

Melalnie – that’s why I like to use durable plastic shoe boxes, they are durable and last longer.

Beautiful geraniums! No, I don’t think I have tried a plant from a cutting. So far we have not been in a church that does OCC, but I think our current one does. Favorite cookie: either Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip or Pudding Chip (with instant vanilla pudding mix in the batter). The virtual reunion sounds fun! We FaceTime with my oldest son a couple of times a month, but I have tried Messenger that way yet or tried anything with multiple people. I think we did it once with Google Hangout as a family just to test it out, but never really used it for that purpose afterward. I have not used that app, but I love one called Word Swag: you can upload your own picture or search for one of theirs and write whatever you want on it, choosing colors, fonts, etc. It cost a few $, but I have used it so much, it has paid for itself.

Thanks for the info, Barb. I am going to check out Word Swag. I like the idea of using my own words. It is so nice to have choices.

I have never thought to do cinnamon sticks in water. I’ve infused all sorts of fruit and cucumbers and herbs but never cinnamon. I have got to try that. Great idea with the cookies. My favorites are white chocolate macadamia nut. Love them a little too much. I heard OCC has plastic boxes now available. I’ll have to look up and see if they are available in Canada yet.
