Writing Down and Reading About Blessings Make You 25% Happier

. at . 22 comments

The weekly practice of writing down 5 blessings increases your happiness by 25% is the conclusion of research.  I also read that even reading the blessings of others increases your happiness.

Since I participate in Susanne’s Friday’s Fave Five, I write my own

Eating fire-roasted corn makes me happy too

Eating fire-roasted corn makes me happy too

weekly gratitude list and I read the lists of others. I also try to comment on their lists. All this gratitude thinking is bound to affect my happiness. Research says so!

Why don’t you give yourself a happiness boost? Write your own Fave Five post and link it up to Susanne’s Blog, Living to Tell the Story at this week’s Friday’s Fave Five.

Read on for my list . . .

1. I can finally move my left arm away from my body enough to comfortably wash my left arm pit. This may be a strange gratitude. But unless you’ve been immobilized and then “freed,” you cannot guess how wonderful this feels.

2. Details for women’s retreat and the children’s ministry summer schedule are coming to completion. Of course this is not all due to solo efforts. Barbie, LaRee, Marsha and Pam have been indispensable in work output and encouragement.

3. I attended two celebrations this week. (1) One of my nieces graduated from junior high school. SJ is a confident, smart, lovely, caring, young woman. And those are just some of her wonderful traits.

(2) My daughter had her 27th birthday. Family and friends (Ian flew in from CO) gathered at Ocean Beach for a beach party: food cooked over the fire, walks along the beach, volleyball and softball (I watched), lots of conversation, and staring into the fire.

Before that we had the opportunity to experience After the Flood, an interactive art show that my daughter helped put together. Click here to see a bit of what we did.

Elizabeth is a creative, brave, persistent, kind, grateful, lovely  (and more) woman. I am humbled, overjoyed, and pleased to know both SJ and Elizabeth.

4. I am finished with the book of Isaiah. I always enjoy reading the “prophet” books of the Bible. I find such comfort from God there. And I love that even if the prophet doesn’t experience God’s power, justice and mercy on his behalf or his country’s behalf, the prophet is still determined to worship God. I want to be more like that.

5. Increased range of motion in the side stretch (from -10 to 88 degrees) and more physical strength means I can do more. I am now cooking all my meals (made waffles) and doing all my own cleaning (steam cleaned the carpet).

Isn’t that interesting about the research. God knew what he was talking about when He said to be grateful, didn’t He?

Love your descriptions of the special girls in your life. It just made me smile as your love for them came through.

An interactive art show sounds like a lot of fun!

Isn’t it cool Susanne, that you even picked the number 5? The show was a lot of fun even though I mainly had to watch the others play.

Yes, Olive Tree, last week surely was a great one esp since I got to spend extra time with family members. Now that my kiddos are older and don’t even live in the same city anymore, i soooo appreciate time with them. Yes, little by little is how I progress on my arm, I wish it was faster though.

Yes, Laura, I am particularly pleased about #1! I am pleased I got some good pix of my family. Sometimes they get tired of me taking pix of them.

awesome about the research…no surprise there tho since God tells us to be thankful in all things…in all times….love it! great week for you…yay for better movement of the arm and for corn on the cob, beach walks and family time! my goal last year was to read thru all the minor prophets and 2 of the major ones. My faves thus far are Isaiah and Zephaniah. So many golden truths there, huh?? enjoy your weekend…

Great reading goal for last year, Faith. I want to finish up the whole Bible by the end of summer if possible. There is a new Bible I want to get (The Visual Bible) but I won’t let myself buy it until I finish with this translation. Yes, there are many golden truths.

Yes, Brenda, I saved my “strength” points so that I could go to SF. I didn’t want to miss that outing. After I’ve “counted my blessings” I feel so much more grateful for my life. I hope this is an exercise I do for many a year even if I don’t always write it on my blog.

I am glad, Catherine, that I am slowly getting better. I will be soooo thrilled when it doesn’t make my fff list. I like finding research that fits my life. Sometimes I spend a little too much time looking things up.

Susan, thank you very much for your last comment on my blog post. That’s very kind of you, and you are brave. Your comment is very inspiring and uplifting. I know it will be tough, but if I can just remember supporting words like what you said and from my friends, then I think I’ll be okay. I will remember that I’m not the only one who will have to go through something like this. Thank you for sharing your story there. I appreciate it. I will be writing less in the next few weeks, maybe even months, but I know I will continue write. With time, hopefully I can come back to write more. Take care of that arm, and many blessings to you.

You are welcome, Trish. I get so encouraged as well. especially since I have come to see many of the participants as “friends.” I rejoice when they do and am sad when they are. I look forward to getting to know you too.
