even with a broken shoulder i have reasons to be grateful

on april 16, 2011, i went hiking. instead of just enjoying the view, my feet slid down an incline. i ended up with a broken shoulder. these past few weeks i have had spells of fretfulness. a good cure for this is sharing my gratitude list.

1. haircut. my formerly shoulder length hair is now chin length.  i can use a wash cloth to clean my hair on my own.

2. garden. a few weeks ago i spontaneously decided to buy pots and fill them with begonias, impatients, etc.  for my shady patio. now that i am home bound, this view is a great encouragement.

3. meals. many people have circled me with practical actions of care, like meals. until i can shop, chop, and open things on my own, i am very grateful for and depend upon these acts of kindness.

4. hot tub.  today i remembered that my apartment complex has a hot tub. since my muscles were very sore from a small walk today, i went and soaked my calves in the lukewarm water. while not hot, the water soothed my muscles.

  1. 5. healing.  since i am taking fewer pain meds, my thinking is clearer. my body is stronger. the bruise and swelling on my arm looks better too. my nights are not so hot, but i’ve had three great days in a row. NOTE: even though the bruising/swelling is on my arm, it is my shoulder that is broken.
of course, i am grateful to many people. they’ve been helping me with rides to the doctor, my work assignments, house chores, errands, and caring for my dog. the get well cards and messages (via facebook, texts, and phone calls) have cheered me up too. you know who you all are. i am truly blessed and grateful for what you’ve been doing for me.
if you want to share your own gratitude list on this friday’s fave five, go here to do so.

yes, i have been blessed with help. it is because of the help that i’ve been able to stay in the comfort and security of my own home.

      thanks for visiting today, ellen.

Oh my! Sorry to hear about your broken shoulder. My friend broke her shoulder on Wed, Apr 27, and she has had some serious pain. I feel so bad for her. And now you too! Glad you are on the mend though and that you have had such good help!

lisa, please tell your friend that she is in my prayers. i have a lot of time to pray now.

this probably sounds wrong, but i am glad that since i did break my shoulder, at least i was doing something new and out of my comfort zone. i tend to be clutsy and could just as easily as broken it going to check my mail.

however, i doubt that i will ever go hiking in those kinds of trails ever again. once is enough.

thanks for your compassion, barbara. it is a relief to have turned the corner. my temptation is to do too much too soon. so i am trying hard to patiently go through each stage of healing.

Hi Susan, thanks for coming by to visit. I answered your questions on my blog, but here it is again — The collage is done in Photoshop though I understand there are online (free) services that let you upload photos to do mosaics. The five minute bread is a method by the people at the link — it’s basically a wetter dough that you keep in the fridge and take out as much as you need, let rest, and bake.

Ouch, your shoulder sounds really painful, but I’m glad you had a few good days. Hopefully, you’ll get the rest and refreshment you need for complete healing.

thanx for the info, nikki. someday i hope to do both – bake the bread and make mosaic pix for my blog.

my shoulder does look bad, but it is finally feeling much better. i am following my doctor’s orders so that i do heal completely and quickly. even though it is now getting boring since i am not spaced out on pain meds.

i am going to have someone take a picture today as that picture is a week or so old.
brenda, i am surprised that my bruise is so low on my arm since the break is at the bottom of the ball of my humerous bone.
yes, i am blessed with friends. i sure am learning humility in asking for help.

      thanx catherine for the prayers.

one of the ladies i went hiking with said to me last week, “do you remember that your feet and legs were hanging over the trail? i was praying that god would stop you!” i don’t remember, but sure am grateful that god answered her prayer.

you are so right, hip chick. the hot tub is my big reward for going on the walk each day. who knew you can get so out of shape from only 2 1/2 weeks of inactivity?

Happy Mother’s Day, Susan! I’ve been praying for you! I hope your day was great! I hope you’ve been able to sleep some! We’re in the last few weeks of school. After that, I’ll be able to stay in touch better!
